We sat down with Joshua Cables to learn more about his experience taking SkillStorm’s CompTIA Security+ COOL course. Joshua spent 20 years in the Air Force in aircraft maintenance but is working on transitioning to a career in cybersecurity. He was able to leverage his COOL certification training course to give him a leg up in his upcoming SkillBridge program.
What started your interest in technology? I took a pre-TAPs (Transition Assistance Program) course before I deployed last year and the person who was teaching that course also went into cybersecurity. I did some research into cybersecurity and the growth there was pretty incredible, it seemed like something that was already up my alley. The idea for me was to train for cybersecurity, become qualified and certified in it, and then in the future pick up something as a team manager or program manager.
What made you want to enroll in a SkillStorm COOL course? One of my buddies talked me into using SkillBridge to get into cybersecurity. I have no real experience in it, however, I’m decent with computers. I was recommended to take a COOL course before doing SkillBridge to get a leg up, earn certifications and learn basic terminology. It turned out to be wildly more information than I was expecting, but in a good way. It helped me prepare for what I’m about to get myself into with my SkillBridge.
How was your experience in your COOL course? Training was really good! I like the fact that everything in the course was recorded. The instructor was present every single time for class if you were available to make it. I only had one instance where it took longer than 24 hours to get an answer back on a question. But, for the most part, it was pretty instant and the course message boards are helpful.
A lot of students in the class were more than willing to help if you didn’t know something. The course followed the CompTIA course very closely and the instructor would do a deep dive at the end of the lesson and further explain things that he felt were more important.
