Deloitte’s On Cloud Podcast Featured SkillStorm’s Co-founder and Chairman to Discuss Filling the Tech Skills Gap

The tech industry is in a constant state of evolution, and companies are always looking for new talent to fill the skills gap. One solution SkillStorm offers to fill the skills gap is hiring veterans. Veterans bring a unique set of skills and experiences to the table that are invaluable in the tech industry. Here are some key highlights from the On Cloud podcast with Deloitte’s host, David Linthicum, and SkillStorm’s co-founder, Vince Virga.

The Benefits of Hiring Veterans

Veterans have a wealth of experience and skills that can be applied to the tech industry. Military training allows them to work in high-pressure environments, demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills, and learn quickly.

Veterans are also highly adaptable and can work well in a team environment. These skills are highly transferable to the tech industry, where teamwork, problem-solving, and adaptability are essential. Virga said, “The biggest feedback we get is these individuals are very used to working in a team...the fact that they can collaborate, and then the way our process works, we train them in teams, they’re deployed in teams...there’s a very high level of collaboration there.” He attributes these qualities to their “mission-focused” mindset, one trait that is valuable in any team-work environment.

What Roles Are Vets Looking at?

Linthicum continued the conversation, asking what veterans should be thinking about as they transition out of the military. He asked, “How would you advise them to kind of getting the skills and aligning themselves...to something that’s going to position them to work with a company like yours or even learn these skills themselves?”

One way to look at it is that as tech continues to evolve, so does the development of roles. One area that seems to trend with veterans? Cybersecurity. Virga said, “What we’ve heard from a lot of the veterans we work with, a lot of them really have a desire to be in cyber. They see that as sort of another way to serve the country, and obviously the demand in cyber is probably higher than just about any other skillset at this point in time.” He continued saying “thinking about AI and how sophisticated cyberattacks have become, I think the number of cyber jobs is just going to continue to skyrocket.”
